Our Work in New Mexico

New Mexico’s Medical Psilocybin Act will help more people find the relief and healing they need in a supervised setting.

About New Mexico’s Medical Psilocybin Program

Program Details

New Mexico is the first state in the nation to use a medically-integrated model for regulated access to psilocybin therapy. While program details are being finalized, this framework will require participants have a qualifying health condition or end-of-life care need to be eligible for psilocybin therapy, with care delivered by licensed healthcare providers. The goal of New Mexico’s model: create a pathway for affordability, accessibility and eventual insurance coverage.

  • Not a retail or dispensary model. No one will be able to purchase psilocybin for personal use or take psilocybin away from the approved care location.

  • Clients and patients must use a licensed and trained facilitator and an approved process that includes medical screening, preparation, administration, facilitation, and integration.

  • Psilocybin therapy will occur at safe, state-approved locations.

  • The program will have safety protocols for the safe storage and transportation of psilocybin.

The Process

  1. Safety + Eligibility Screening:
Clients with qualifying health conditions or end-of-life care needs will undergo an additional health screening, providing complete and accurate health information to identify any contraindications.

  2. Preparation:
Client and facilitator meet to discuss intentions for the psilocybin therapy session and to co-create a safety and support plan.

  3. Administration:
Psilocybin is administered to the patient at an approved care location.

  4. Facilitation:
The patient is supported throughout their experience by a trained and licensed facilitator who oversees the session and supports the participant throughout their experience.

  5. Integration:
An important part of the healing process, integration is a discussion between client and facilitator that helps clients incorporate the insights from the experience into their daily lives.

What We Do

  • Advocate for regulations that create a natural medicine program that is of high quality, accessible, equitable and maximizes safety.

  • Educate stakeholders, policymakers, regulators, and the general public on New Mexico’s program.

  • Support psilocybin program centers, training schools, and facilitators in getting off the ground with technical assistance, learning collaboratives, and high-quality programming.

  • Serve as a convener for the New Mexico medical psilocybin ecosystem to collaboratively address goals and challenges, organize around shared needs, deliver services to high standards and best practices, and create a vibrant network of care that will serve as a model for the world.

“I served in Afghanistan, but back home I suffered. PTSD, anger and depression. Many Colorado vets like me die by suicide. I could have been one. Psilocybin therapy helped when nothing else did. The FDA calls it a breakthrough therapy because it breaks the cycle of pain and the negative thoughts.”
